Interior Design for Larger Homes and Flexible Spaces

Bigger rooms are harder to furnish well. Good interiors start with how you will actually live in the space.

Scale and Zoning

Large open rooms benefit from defined zones — rugs, lighting, and furniture groupings that create places to sit, eat, and gather without walls.

Light on Wooded Lots

Tree cover changes light through the seasons. Test paint and finishes in place at different times of day before committing.

Flexible Rooms

  • Guest rooms that double as offices.
  • Bonus rooms planned for media or play, with wiring in place.
  • Mudrooms sized for outdoor life on larger lots.

Working With a Designer

Interior design is most effective when it begins before construction or renovation drawings are final. Furniture layouts determine where outlets, lighting, and window placements should go, and cabinetry or built-ins depend on dimensions that are hard to change once framing is complete.

A good first meeting covers how you use each room, what you plan to keep, budget ranges by room, and the timeline for selections. Ask how the designer coordinates with your builder and how selections and changes are documented.

  • Agree on a selections schedule tied to the construction timeline.
  • Clarify whether pricing is a flat fee, hourly, or tied to purchases.
  • Plan durable finishes for mudrooms, kitchens, and high-traffic areas.
  • Coordinate lighting and technology plans with the electrical rough-in.
