Smart Homes and Home Technology
The best home technology is planned before the walls close. Here is what to think about early.
Plan Early
- Wired network drops and access-point locations.
- Media rooms and distributed audio.
- Lighting control and shades.
- Security cameras and access control.
- Equipment location with ventilation and power.
On Larger Properties
Long drives, detached buildings, and outdoor spaces may need extended network coverage. Confirm internet service availability for the specific address first.
What to Pre-Wire
Wireless products are convenient, but a reliable home system still depends on wiring placed before drywall. Structured cabling to a central equipment location, network drops for access points, and conduit to key rooms make future upgrades far easier.
Walk the framed house with your technology designer to confirm speaker, display, camera, and access-point locations against the furniture plan. Photographs of open walls are a useful record for future work.
- A central, ventilated equipment location with power and cooling.
- Network cabling to televisions, offices, and access-point locations.
- Conduit to the attic, media areas, and exterior where future runs are likely.
- Low-voltage planning for lighting control, shades, and security.
